Endodontics
Endodontics is a topic
of dentistry which
deals with the tooth
pulp and tissues
surrounding the root
of a tooth. The pulp
can become unhealthy
or injured and thus is
unable to restore
itself. The pulp then
dies and endodontic
cure is required. The
word comes from the
Greek words endo
meaning within and
odons meaning tooth.
Literally taken, it
means learning of that
which is "inside the
tooth". Endodontic
treatment is needed
when the pulp becomes
reddened or infected.
The most ordinary
reasons for irritation
or infection are deep
cavities, repeated
dental procedures,
cracks or chips.
Trauma can also cause
irritation and often
shows up as
discoloration of the
tooth. If pulp
inflammation or
infection is
untreated, it can
cause pain or lead to
a swelling.
